Butler ==================================================================== Bladen County Deed Book 8 pg 569 This indenture made the 5th day of March AD 1840 between James Smith, Sr.of the County of Bladen and state of North Carolina of the one part and William Smith of the same county and state aforesaid of the other part. witnessth that the said James Smith, Sr as will for and in consideration of the love and affection which I have and bear to my son William Smith as well as divers other causes and consi- deration as also for the better maintenance and prefurment of the said William Smith do give and grant by these presents do give and grant unto my son William Smith 162 acres of land in two tracts bounded as followith; 1st tract lying and being in said county of Bladen on the E side of Jame's creek beginning at a pine and runs S 40 W 24 chains 63 links to a stake then E 30 chains then S 23 chains 41 links then 50 links then S 25 W 18 chains then to the beginning for one hundred and two acres. Also another tract for 60 acres beginning at a dead pine William Whites corner and runs with his line S 33 E 71 chains to a stake Mathern corner then S 18 E 24 chains to black Jack Whites corner then N 36 W 86 chains to a stake. Then comes then direct to the beginning and I the said James Smith, Sen. do for myself my heirs Exec. Admin. & assigns unto the said William Smith his heirs Exec. Admin. & assigns do and will warrant and forever defend the said land and presents with its appurtenances unto the said William Smith his heirs and assigns forever against the lawful claims of any person of persons whatsoever. In witness whereof the said James Smith hath hereunto set his hand & seal the day and year on the other side written. signed sealed and delivered James Smith Sr. (seal) in the presence of us State of North Carolina, Bladen County. The execution of the written deed was duly proven in open court by James Carroll a subscribing witness trust & ordered to be registered.
