BB ----------------------- Declaration In order to obtain the benefit of the third section of the Act of Congress of the 4th of July 1836 and the Joint Resolution of July 7, 1838. State of North Carolina Bladen County On this the 4th day of May in the year of 1844, personally appeared before the undersigned, one of the Justices of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for said county, Lucy Shipman a resident of said county of Bladen, aged 84 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath make the following Declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress, passed July 4th, 1836 and the Joint Resolution of July 7th, 1838. That she is the widow of James Shipman who during the war of the Revolution was Captain of Militia, and some time in the early part of the year 1833 was placed on the United States pension Roll at the rate of $480. pr. annum. She further declares that she was married to the aforesaid Captain James Shipman, on the twenty fourth day of February One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty, by Robert Daniel, then an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said County of Bladen, and duly authorized to solemnize the rites of Matrimony; That her husband the aforesaid Captain Shipman died on the fourth day of January One Thousand Eight Hundred and forty four, and that she has remained a widow every since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereunto annexed, which she sets forth is all the proofs she can procure from those who are knowing to her marriage and the date thereof. The Declarant has a family Record, which she further declares to be as it purports, a true and faithful "Family Record". That by reason of old age and bodily infirmity is unable to attend court to make this Declaration. That her husband died as above set forth on the 4th day of January 1844, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereunto annexed. her Lucy X Shipman mark Sworn to and subscribed, the day & year above written before me. Monroe, J.P. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I, the said Magistrate after investigating the matter of the application of Mrs. Lucy Shipman for a pension and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department hereby declare my opinion that said Declarant and Captain James Shipman were lawfully married in the Month of February One Thousand Seven hundred and eighty. And I further certify that I am personally acquainted with the Declarant Lucy Shipman and aforesaid Captain James Shipman of Bladen, and that the said Lucy has not married since the death of her husband the aforesaid Captain James Shipman, but still remains his widow. I further certify that, I believe the Declarant to be of the age she represents herself to be, and that from her advanced age and infirmity of body is unable to attend Court to make her Declaration. And further that said Lucy is known to me as a person of good character and entitled to full and ample credit. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal on the 4th day of May in the year of our Lord 1844. C. Monroe, J.P. (Seal) ----------------------------------------------------------------- I, David Lewis, Clerk of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions for Bladen County do hereby certify that the Declaration and accompanying proofs of Lucy Shipman was this day submitted to the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions for said County, was read, examined, and approved, by said Court. Whereupon it was ordered by the Court that I certify the same to the War Department. I further certify that satisfactory proof was furnished said Court that Captain James Shipman, an United States pensioner did die on the 4th day of January last, leaving a widow Lucy him surviving. I also certify that Colin Monroe whose name appears to the foregoing Declaration is a Magistrate as above, and that the foregoing signatures purporting to be his are genuine. Shipman whose widow is now applying for a pension, and that I do verialy [sic] believe it contains the facts as they transpired. Neill Currie, J.P. Russ is an Acting Justice of the Peace in & for said County, duly commissioned & sworn & the signatures purporting to be his is jennuine [sic] in Witness where I have set my hand and affix my seal of office at Elizath Town this 6th May, 1844. David Lewis, Clk. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Power of Attorney For ascertaining whether any increase or arrears of Pension are due the Widow or Heirs of Revolutionary Pensioners, &c. State of North Carolina County of Bladen Be it known that before me William S. Rinaldi, a Justice of the Peace personally appeared William Shipman, aged 55 years, who being duly cautioned and then sworn in due form of law, states that he is the son of James and Lucy Shipman, deceased, who was a revolutionary pensr Act 4th July 1835 in the State of North Carolina and that he died on the 4th day of January, 1844 and that his mother, named Lucy Shipman died on the 9th day of November 1847 and that they were married on the ____day of _______ in the year 17___ and that they were residents of Bladen Co., in the State of N. Carolina and that they resided there during life and that he resides in Bladen Co., N.C. and that furthermore He by these Presents, constitutes, appointes, and fully empowers and authorizes, irrevocably and with powers of substitution P.M. Henry of Washington, D.C., as my true and lawful Attorney for me and in my name and stead, to examine into, to prosecute, to demand, and to receive from the U.S. Government and State officers his rights in all and in any manner of claim for increase or arrears of Pension or Land that may be due him as heir of Lucy Shipman, Dcd. who died leaving the same undrawn, as in right of law he may be entitled.
