Austin mdaustin@connect.net Davis, Sampson W. 6964 Ruth B.L.Wt. 17575-160-55 State of North Carolina Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Cumberland County September Term 1834 On the 5th day of September AD 1834, personally appeared in open Court, this Court aforesaid now in session. Sampson Davis, a resident of Bladen County and State, aged Seventy nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain this benefit, the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United Stated under the following officers and served as hereafter stated. (viz) He entered the service in the month of March 1777 in a company commanded by Captains William Ellis & William Handon as a volunteer for six months and served out the full term. The company was attached to Col. Thomas Robeson's Regiment. During this service he was marched from the County of Bladen in this State to the town of Wilmington where and at Jumping Run in the neighborhood of Wilmington he was stationed til this tour expired. He again entered the service in the month of October following in Bladen County under Capt. Wm. Ellis and served three months. He entered as a volunteer. The men marched from Bladen County to Caswell Camp in the neighborhood of Wilmington where he was stationed until his term of service expired. He again entered the service as a volunteer in Captain James White's company for three months but served one month only. While in this service he was marched to the Pee Dee River Capt. White's company was attached to Col. James Richardson's Regiment. The following answers were made to the interrogatories presented by the War Department. 1st I was born 12th March 1755 in the County of Edgecombe North Carolina. 2nd I have not. 3rd I lived in Bladen County and still continue to reside there. 4th I volunteered. 5th I know Gen. Tho Brown, Col. Owen, Major Raiford & others. 6th I do not recollect of receiving any discharge, if I did I have lost it. 7th I would refer to Gov. John Owen, John Hair, Esq. of Bladen & to Stephen Hollingsworth, Sr. of Cumberland County. 8th I have made my declaration in this court because it was more convenient to present my testimony. McLean Jr., Clk And this said Sampson Davis exhibited in open court the affidavit of Stephen Hollingsworth Sr. in support of his claims for a pension which was taken before Jno Averitt Esq., one of the Justices of this court. I, John Hair, of Bladen County certify that I am well acquainted with Sampson Davis who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration that I believe him to be seventy nine years of age and that he is respected and believed in the neighborhood in which he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that I concur in that opinion and I further certify that there is no minister of the gospel residing in my neighborhood. And this said court do certify & declare their opinion after this investigation of the matter of entering the interrogations presented by the Department that the above named applicant was a soldier of the Revolution & served as he stated & they further certify that Stephen Hollingsworth Sr. & John Hair Esq. Clerk of the Court of Pleas and quarter sessions of Cumberland County in the State of North Carolina, do hereby certify that the foregoing contained the original proceedings of said court in the matter of application of Sampson Davis for a pension & In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my office and of the said court, at Fayetteville the 5th day of September A. D. 1834 and the 59th year of American Independence. Archibald McLean Sr., Clerk State of North Carolina, Bladen County On this 2nd day of August 1853 personally appeared before the court of Pleas and Quarterly Sessions of the county of Bladen and State aforesaid, Ruth Davis, a resident of the State of North Carolina and county of Bladen, age years, who being duly sworn according to law, doth under her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed on the 3rd day of February 1853, that she is the widow of Sampson Davis, a Revolutionary pensioner, who drew annually twenty three dollars and 33 cents. Said Sampson Davis being a resident of Bladen County in the State aforesaid, and received his pension at the agency in Fayetteville North Carolina. She further declares that she was married to the said Sampson Davis on the ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ in the year eighteen hundred and fifteen ~~~~~ , that her husband, the aforesaid Sampson Davis died on the 27nd day of Feb. 1840; that she was married to him at the time above stated. She further swears that she was a widow at the passage of the act, and is still a widow, and that she has never before made application for a pension.
