C. Bridger Bladenboro, Feb. 11.-Bladenboro was honored Monday by a visit from the county’s oldest citizen, so far as is known. The visitor was Mrs. Sallie Jean Dove, widow of the late Mr. William, who died at the age of 107 a few years ago. Mrs. Dove, who was born in 1855, was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Storm, has lived all of her 95 years in Bladen county, going outside only twice in that time. Her journeys were both to Lumberton. She is “hearty and well”, has never used spectacles, and enjoys life to the fullest. Mrs. Dove is one of the charter members of Sandy Grove church, which she still attends occasionally. Some of her recollections of the Civil war days include the tragic ending of a neighbor who deserted the army and hid in a home near to her father’s. Officers searched the house and were in the act of leaving when some one noticed a pile of cotton in the room and upon investigating, discovered the unfortunate deserter soldier. He was shot and wounded, and next day taken to the gallows and hanged. Mrs. Dove has living near her the following children, Mrs. Arie Dove, Theo Dove, Mrs. Marshall Dove, A daughter, deceased, was Mrs. Tom Dever. Additional Comments: The Storm family begins their history in old Bladen Co NC with their ancestor Wendel Storm who died in the 1700s. His son John Storm married Jemima Chauncey and lived at their plantation known as "High Hills" on the Drowning Creek, now Lumber River near Lumberton, Robeson Co NC. His son Charles Storm, a veteran of the War of 1812, and family, moved from the Burnt Islands in Robeson Co NC to the Hickory Grove Community in western Bladen Co NC in 1840. His son, Dennis Storm, was the father of the subject of this article, Sallie Jean Storm Dove.
