ROY JOHNSON Mr. F. Roy Johnson of Murfreesboro, N.C., a journalist, publisher, historian and folklorist, died Monday, Oct. 17, 1988, at age 76. A native of Bladen County, N.C. and a graduate of Duke University, Mr. Johnson was a self-taught printer who began his publishing career in 1937 with the Surry Herald in Surry County. In 1940, he moved his family and newspaper operation to Murfreesboro where he printed the Northeastern North Carolina News, a paper he had started while in Surry County. In 1947, Mr. Johnson changed the paper’s name to the Roanoke-Chowan Daily News and in 1963 sold that business to Parker Brothers Newspapers of Ahoskie. For the next 25 years, Mr. Johnson researched, wrote, set to type, bound and published more than 60 books, primarily dealing with the folklore and history of eastern North Carolina. Mr. Johnson also served one term as president of the North Carolina Folklore Society and in 1976 received that organization’s highest recognition, the Brown- Hudson Folklore Award. In 1988, the Murfreesboro Historical Association awarded a “Certificate of Merit” to Mr. Johnson for his “significant contributions to the town of Murfreesboro, Hertford County and the entire Roanoke-Chowan Region of North Carolina.” Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hamlin Johnson; a son, Charles William Johnson of Bryson City, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Ann Johnson of Goldsboro, N.C.; a brother, Nolon Johnson of Ivanhoe.
