Magistrates and Freeholders Court March 05, 1778 Volume 13, Pages 375-376 State of North Carolina: Brunswick County. March 5th., 1778. At a Court held for the tryal of a negro man slave for the murder of Henry Williams, said fellow being the property of Mrs. Sarah Dupree. Justices of the Peace present William Paine John Bell Thomas Sessions Free holders: John Stanton James Ludlow Needham Gause Aaron Roberts According to law valued said negro James at eighty pounds Procklamation Money. The court proceeded on said tryal and the said fellow James confessed himself to be One that had a hand in the murdering of said Henry Williams in concurrence with the evidence of four other mallefactors that were executed for Being Concerned in said murder on the 18th. day of March 1777. Ordered that the Sheriff take the said Jimmy from hence to the Place of execution where he shall be tyed to a stake and Burnt Alive. Given under my hands this 5th. day of March 1778. We, the undernamed persons being summoned as Justices of the Peace and freeholders of the County aforesaid to hold a court for the Tryal of a negro man slave named James the property of Mrs. Sarah Dupree for the murder of Mr. Henry Williams of Lockwood Folly do value the said slave James at the sum of Eighty pounds Procklamation Money.
