Brunswick County, NC - Col. Benjamin Smith Donates Land, 1790 Newbern, NC - March 25 Col. Benjamin Smith of Brunswick County has made a generous donation of 20,000 acres of valuable land to the University of North Carolina which is now incorporated. The general assembly have returned this gentleman their thanks for this liberal gift. Learning has hitherto been too much neglected in this state, which is most evidently exemplified in those of our public bodies where men of science and ability are particularly required, most of whom at this time (the exceptions indeed are remarkable few) are natives of other states or foreign countries. By endowing schools and universities in this manner, with permanent funds, solid learning may be expected, and able professors. On the contrary establishing universities, &c. on the narrow and pitiful basis of the tuition money, is the surest way to have superficial matters and half-read scholars; in both which descriptions the United States, in general, too much abound.
