Dear Sir: Will you please tell me if James Mills a Captain in the 10th Regiment of N.C. during the Revolutionary war received a pension? If so please give me all of the family records given with this application for pension. Thanking you for your kindness Very truly yours Mrs. Samuel Mills Nabors Hartwell, Ga. [image 3] Rev. War Section. July 21, 1921. Mrs. Samuel M. Nabors or Nalors, Hartwell, Georgia. Madam: In response to your letter dated July 11, 1921, you are advised that from the records of this Bureau it appears that 300 acres of Bounty Lands was allowed on account of the Revolutionary War services of Captain James Mills of the North Carolina Line, on Warrant No. 1533 which issued March 2, 1790 to William and Benjamin Mills, heirs –at-law. There is no further information on file as to his services owing to the destruction of the papers in such claims when the War Office was burned in November 1800. It does not appear that a claim for pension was made on account of his services. Very respectfully, Commissioner. Additional Comments: Two different dates are given for the issuing of the bounty land warrant – 1799 according to the folder cover of James Mills's file and 1790 according to the Commissioner's letter – and it's unknown which one is correct. From J.D. Lewis, "NC Patriots 1775-1783: Their Own Words": James Mills; 8th NC Regt; a 1st Lieutenant under Capt. Thomas Nixon. Transferred to 1st NC Regiment on 6/1/1778. 1/9/1779, a Captain under Col. Thomas Clark in the 5th NC Regiment. Spring of 1781, a Captain in the 1st NC Regiment. Another source claims he was killed in a skirmish in March of 1781. Many sources show him alive well into 1782. 2/6/1782, transferred to 4th NC Regiment. Resigned on 1/1/1783. From Brunswick County, NC. Known battles: Stono Ferry (SC), Eutaw Springs (SC). According to the North Carolina State Archives, a number of soldiers were erroneously shown on the Register of the North Carolina Line as having served in the 10th Regiment who actually served in other commands.
