DR. NICHOLAS L. STITH. In the higher civilization it became a principle that de mortuis nil uisi bonum, (no evil should be spoken concerning the dead.) The same principle which dictates that a mantle be thrown over the faults of the dead, prompts us to render immortal the names of those “whose sword or voice has served mankind”. The subject of this sketch was born at “Quanky”, Halifax county, Dec 4th, 1807, a descendant of Col. Nicholas Long of Revolutionary memory, studied medicine, graduated at the University of Pennsylvania, and became a Physician of celebrity. He and his brother Albert became early associated in business and remained so to the end, acquiring the name of the “Cheeryble Brothers.” Dr. Stith was the pioneer in developing the celebrated Coal Fields of Chatham. The deceased married Miss Anna Hill of Cape Fear. Stith’s full name to be Dr. Nicholas Long Bassett Stith. He was the son of Mary Long and Col Bassett Stith. Mary Long’s parents: Col Nicholas Long and Mary McKinne. Dr Nicholas Bassett Long Stith was from Halifax, Halifax Co NC. Dr. Nicholas Long Bassett Stith married Anna Austin Hill on Thursday, 22 Apr 1847 at the Orton Plantation, Brunswick Co NC at Dr. Frederick Jones Hill’s residence. Dr. Hill was owner of the Orton Plantation at the time of this wedding. Currently, research has not proven if Dr. Frederick Jones Hill is Anna Austin Hill’s father. If he is her father, then her mother would be Anne Ivy Watters who married Dr. Frederick Jones Hill at St James Church, Wilmington, New Hanover Co NC on 02 Apr 1812.
