BURKE COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - Granite Hill Cemetery ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Douglas Branch ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is listed in the Burke Co. cemetery survey records dated 1989. There is no church at this location in 1989. Status-Abandoned No. of markers-found 2 Earliest burial-1906 Latest burial-1907 Readable stones-2 On January 14, 2001 the following was found at Granite Hill by me and my mother (Lillie Carswell Branch) 4-Marked headstones were found 2-stones were broken but were readable 1-CSA marker was found (listed on 1989 survey as latest stone) 3-marked footstones with initials were also found as well as 24 head and foot stones (of plain field stones with headstone bigger than the foot, all with no markings.) The following is what was found on the readable markers. James C. Terry, Co. C, 6th NC Inf, CSA. His stone is polished black granite and is laying flat on the ground. W. L. Carswell born 11-3-1837 died 4-14-1914 died at 76yrs.6mos.11days. (MY GGGRANDFATHER) I have ordered a VA headstone for W. L. and have reserved it and am in the prosses of restoring the cemetery. He was in Co. B, 54th NC Inf .Reg. His present marker is broken into two pieces. Walter S. Allman Born 1-30-1900 died 6-19-1921. Mary A. Evans wife of W. L. Evans born 6-1-1867 died 9-26-1906 (She is listed on the 1989 survey as the earlest burial. The person who read the cemetery was not a very thorough surveyor and should have seen all these markers.) The 3 marked foot stones read L.A.E. E.E. E.R. I know of at least 10 more persons that are buried there, most of them from my mother's family, who have no markings. The locations are known by relatives. As far as I am aware my GGrandfather was the last person buried there in June of 1941. I had all this put in the Cemeteries of Burke Co. Vol. IV, 2001 I'd like to find out how to get it registered because it has at least two WBTS (War Between the States) soldiers from Burke Co. buried there. The old church was destroyed in the late 1930s and I'm afraid it will get eaten up by development in the area. Any information you can give me would be very much apprecated.
