BURKE COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - McDowell-Tate Cemetery --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- The cemetery is located on a hilltop overlooking Quaker Meadows on the north side of the Catawba River near Morganton, in Burke County, North Carolina. This document is based on a survey done on May 6, 1951, by W. Leon Gilbert, Dr. J. E. Hodge, and R. L. Hefner. This survey, which is not in alphabetical order, may indicate the approximate arrangement of the grave markers in the cemetery. Names and dates on the 1951 survey were compared with an alphabetical listing of the markers that was done in 1939 by the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina. Information from other sources is in italics. This survey includes 59 markers. Compiled by John B. Tindal, Jr., 190 Diamond T Circle, Sumter, SC 29150 1. Mary M. Greenlee died October 14, 1817 age 10 days. 2. John Greenlee of Virginia died November 4, 1805, age 67 years. He was the son of Mary Elizabeth McDowell and James Greenlee. John was born in Virginia on October 4, 1738. 3. Gen. Charles McDowell - a Whig officer in the Revolutionary War who died as he lived - a Patriot. He died March 31, 1815, age about 70 years. Charles was the son of Virginia Margaret O'Neal and Joseph McDowell. Charles was born in Winchester, Virginia, on October 18, 1743. 4. Grace G. McDowell, consort of Gen. C. M. McDowell, died May 18, 1823, in 73rd year of her age. Grace was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth McDowell and James Greenlee. She was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, on June 23, 1750. 5. Capt. Joseph McDowell died February 27, 1773(?). However, his will which is dated March 16, 1770, was probated in November 1771. Perhaps the date on the monument originally read February 27, 1771. The two surveys were inconsistent regarding Joseph's age. One indicated "age 60" and the other indicated "age 65." 6. Hugh McDowell, son of Capt. Joseph McDowell, died March 30, 1772, age 30 years. 7. John Bowman Tate was born January 15, 1799, and died on June 30, 1826. John was the son of Mary Bowman and William Tate. 8. Margaret R. Tate was born January 14, 1832, and died on February 28, 1841. Margaret was the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Tate and Samuel Caldwell Tate. 9. Samuel C. Tate was born January 30, 1801, and died on October 6, 1834, in the 34th year of his age. Samuel Caldwell Tate was the son of Mary Bowman and William Tate. 10. Susan Maria Tate, daughter of Samuel Tate of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, beloved wife of Col. David Tate, Jr. of Morganton, North Carolina, died November 4, 1869, in the 60th year of her age. 11. Col. David Tate, Jr. was born August 9, 1802, and died April 21, 1836. David was the husband of Susan Maria Tate and the son of Nancy Ann Elizabeth McCall and David Tate. 12. Sarah C. Greenlee died July 17, 1818, age 27 years. 13. Ruth Howard Greenlee died January 22, 1812, age 40 years. 14. Mary McDowell died October 25, 1814, age 12 days. 15. Joseph W. McDowell died October 10, 1821, age 6 months and 15 days. 16. James R. McDowell was born September 28, 1792, and died on April 5, 1826. James was the son of Grace Greenlee and Charles McDowell. 17. Samuel M. McDowell was born April 22, 1825, and died on October 1, 1853. 18. David McDowell, son of Hugh McDowell, died June 19, 1767 age 2 years and 8 months. 19. Elizabeth Tate wife of Samuel Tate, born in Pennsylvania, died in Cherokee County, North Carolina, on May 10, 1857, in the 63rd year of her age. 20. John B. Marshall Tate, infant son of Samuel and Elizabeth Tate, born June 10, 1833, and died on April 24, 1834. 21. Joseph Hugh A. Tate, infant son of Dr. Samuel and Elizabeth Tate, born November 29, 1823, and died on June 24, 1824. 22. Col. William Tate died February 18, 1818, in the 53rd year of his age. William was the son of Elizabeth Caldwell and Samuel Robert Tate, Sr. 23. Mary Bowman Tate was born November 22, 1779, and died on February 21, 1825. Mary was the wife of Col. William Tate and the daughter of Grace Greenlee and John Bowman. 24. Margaret Greenlee, daughter of James Greenlee, died January 30, 1778, age 16 days. 25. James Greenlee, Esq., died on November 8, 1813, aged 73 years. James was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, on October 19, 1740. He was a son of Mary Elizabeth McDowell who was born in Ireland and James Greenlee who was born in Ireland. 26. Mary Mitchell Greenlee, consort of James Greenlee, died February 10, 1787. Mary Elizabeth Mitchell was born in South Carolina to Margaret McDowell and James Mitchell. 27. Capt. Charles McDowell was born December 27, 1785, and died on October 5, 1859. Charles was the son of Grace Greenlee and Gen. Charles McDowell. 28. Mrs. Anna McDowell, born on October 25, 1793, and died on November 1, 1859. Anna was the wife of Maj. Gen. Athan A. McDowell. 29. Major Gen. Athan A. McDowell, born October 27, 1790, and died on July 22, 1832. Athan was the son of Grace Greenlee and Gen. Charles McDowell. 30. Samuel Tate, Sr., born in County Derry, Ireland, May 24, 1730, and died on March 23, 1813, the 83rd year of his age. 31. Elizabeth Caldwell Tate, amiable consort of Samuel Tate, Sr., born in County Derry, Ireland, on November 29, 1733, and died on January 8, 1818. 32. David Tate, Sr., a native of Pennsylvania, was born on February 4, 1770, and died on March 25, 1832. David was the son of Elizabeth Caldwell and Samuel Tate, Sr. 33. Nancy Tate, the amiable consort of David Tate, Sr., died on July 27, 1814, in the 40th year of her age. Nancy Ann Elizabeth McCall, wife of David Tate, Sr., was born in Virginia in 1774. 34. Hugh Tate died on March 27, 1816, age 44 years. Hugh, the son of Elizabeth Caldwell and Samuel Tate, Sr. was born in Pennsylvania on June 15, 1772. 35. Major Robert Tate, born on June 4, 1801, and died on May 23, 1826, aged 25 years. 36. Col. Alexander Erwin, born June 6, 1750, and died on June 20, 1830. 37. Eliza A. Spencer, born on June 20, 1811, and died on April 25, 1840. 38. W. Harbison, died on August 15, 1842, in the 28th year of his age. 39. "T.S." (A granite stone bearing only these letters) 40. Jane Adeline Hilton, wife of Joseph G. HIlton, died on August 8, 1858. According to the 1951 survey, the name is Melton rather than Hilton. However, we find a saddler in Burke County at this time named Joseph G. Hilton and we believe that he was the husband of Jane. 41. Col. William McGimsey, born on January 17, 1794, and died on February 9, 1831. 42. Adeline E. Tate McGimsey, born on March 25, 1804, and died on June 5, 1829. Other sources give her name as Elizabeth Adeline Tate. She was the daughter of Mary Bowman and William Tate. She married Col. William McGimsey 43. John William McGimsey, infant son of William and Adeline E. McGimsey, died on September 24, 1827, age 11 months and 15 days. 44. Margaret Erwin Tate, wife of Hugh Tate, born on November 4, 1777, and died on June 16, 1850. Margaret was the daughter of Sarah Robinson and Alexander Robinson. 45. Elizabeth E. Fleming, daughter of Abraham and Jane Fleming, born on February 14, 1809, and died on April 25, 1842. 46. Julia Elizabeth, daughter of A. P. and C. A. Fleming, born on January 22, 1848, and died on January 22, 1860. 47. Jane, wife of A. F. Fleming, Sr., died on March 25, 1860, aged 74 years, 4 months and 6 days. 48. Sarah R. Scott, born in January 2, 1868, and died on May 26, 1868, aged 5 months and 24 days. 49. General John Gray Bynum, born in Stokes County, North Carolina, on May 16, 1813, and died in Wilmington, North Carolina, on October 17, 1857. John was the husband of Mary McDowell, daughter of Anne McDowell and Charles Manly McDowell. 50. Margaret Allison Tate, wife of William C. Butler, died on July 15, 1837, aged 24 years, 8 months and 8 days. 51. Sarah Erwin, died on April 7, 1785, aged 35 years. 52. James Murphy, Sen., a Whig during the Revolutionary War, born on May 24, 1759, and died on November 8, 1831. 53. Margaret S. Murphy Collett, relict of John Murphy and consort of John Collett, born on March 18, 1789, and died on August 14, 1842. 54. William A. Dickson, born on November 7, 1818, and died on January 14, 1819. 55. Mary Louisa, (Tate), consort of the late Rev. Thomas Espy, born on April 17, 1810, and died on May 23, 1836, age 36. Mary was the daughter of Mary Bowman and William Tate. 56. William Claimbore Butler, died on April 10, 1841, aged 39 years. This monument was listed on the 1951 survey but was not listed on the 1939 survey of the cemetery. 57. Elizabeth Ann Butler, child of Wm. C. and M. A. Butler, died on November 8, 1848, age 11 years, 7 months and 12 days. Julius A. Scott, son of J. B. and A. R. Scott, was born on September 9, 1884. Martha C. Scott, daughter of J. B. and A. R. Scott, was born on November 22, 1877 and died on October 8, 1878.
