BURKE COUNTY, NC - COURT - Death of John Brazzeel, 13 Nov 1793 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- JOHN BRAZZEEL State of North Carolina Burk County Whereas Information hath been Made to Me One of the Coroners for said County that a Certain Man Supposed to be the Name of John Brazzeel hath been found Dead and Suppos'd to have Come to his Death By unlawful Means. You are hereby Commanded to Summon twelve Men Such as you think Sufficient to judge of his Death and Sumon John Smith as witnesses in Behalf of the State And Meet Me at the Ground where the said Brazzeel Lies on Wednesday the thirteenth of this instant at twelve aClock. And this Shall be your Warrant given Under My hand and Seal this the 11th Day of Novb'r 1793. John Hughes Co'r To Joseph Morgan Cuns't State of North Carolina An Iquisition Indented taken for the State in the County of Burk the thirteenth Day of Novb'r 1793 and Seventeenth year of American Independence Before John Hughes One of the Coroners of Our State for the Said County on View of the Body of John Bazzeel then and there Lying Dead upon the Oath of Samu'l Brown foreman and Twelve Others good and Lawful Men of the Said County Duly Chosen, and who being then and Duly Sworn and Charged to Enquire for Our State, when how, and By What Means the Said John Brazzeel, Came to his Death do upon there Oath Say that the Said John Brazzeel Not being of sound Mind Memory and Understanding but Lunatick and Distracted hung himself And Died the Eighth Day of Novb'r 1793 And So the jurors Afforesaid upon their Oath Afforesaid do say that the said John Brazzeel in Manner and By Means Afforesaid Not being of Sound Mind Memory and Understanding but Lunatick and Distracted Did hang and kill himself In Witness Whereof as Well the Said Coroner as the Said Samu'l Brown foreman of the said Jurors on the behalf of himself And the Rest of his Said Fellows in theire presences have to this Inquisition Set theire hands and seals the Day and year Above Written~~~ John Hughes (Seal) Samu'l Brown foreman (Seal) On reverse: The Inquisition of John Brazzeel Deseas'd. John Smith a Witness for the State, Saith on Oath that On friday the 8th Day of Novb'r 1790 he was walking Down the Creek Below his house Looking for a Bull Stag and within half a mile of his house he saw John Brazzeel ahanging By the Neck with A grapevin tied One end Round his Neck and the Other end tied to Dogwood Lim and there hung Dead John Hughes Cor. John (his mark) Smith Mary Addams a Witness for the State Saith on Oath that on friday the 3rd Day of Novb'r 1793 Shee was walking Down the Creek Below John Smiths house with said Smith and shee saw John Brazzeel ahanging with a grapevine tied Round his Neck the Other end tied to a Dogwood Lim and there a hanging Dead.
