This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Martha Kapp KAPPSFISH@aol.com ==================================================================== SOME EARLY BURKE COUNTY TOWNS & VILLAGES (this information was gathered by my Father, EUGENE JEFFERSON PEARSON, while doing genealogy research in the 1970s). 1829-1833 (KNOWN AS MINING TOWNS) - BRINDLETOWN, BRACKETTOWN, HUNTSVILLE, JAMESTOWN ANDREWS - was planned in 1886, but never materialized; however had post office in 1887. BOWMAN'S CROSSING - in 1870s and 1880s ; name became ICARD in 1898. BRIDGEWATER - located on Catawba River at mouth of Muddy Creek; developed from plantation of John Rutherford, Jr.; post office established 1852 BRINDLETOWN - developed with 1829 gold rush in southwestern Burke; Post Office established 1830; BURKEMONT - located in southern part of county near headwaters of Bailey's Fork CAMP CREEK - Post Office in operation in 1876; on headwaters of Camp Creek near Catawba-Lincoln-Cleveland-Burke corner. CHAMBERS- Post Office established 1881; approx. 4 miles south of Morganton. CHESTERFIELD (Hoodsville) - Post office est. 1884; in north central Burke CHESTNUT - in Lower Fork Township[, near Catawba Co. line; Post Office there in 1883 CLIFF'S - former name of portion of RHODHISS CONNELLY SPRINGS- 1st Post Office established 1857 as HAPPY HOME, then ICARD, but changed in 1886 to Connelly Springs DOGWOOD or DOGWOOD FLATS- located on the J.C. Hallyburton place ; post office there in 1888 DREXEL - (first called BAKER); began around 1900 ENOLA - 7 miles NE of Morganton ; Post Office estb. 1881 in HUFFMAN's Store EXCELSIOR - established ca. 1871; name changed to RUTHERFORD COLLEGE in 1901. FLIPPERSVILLE- - where S.E. Poteat operated a store in 1890 FONTA FLORA - on Linville River 13 miles N. of Morganton; post office there by 1870; was covered by waters of Lake James when Liville and Catawba Rivers were dammed in 1916-18; merchants Allonah H. GILES (1882-1890s) & J. Thomas MCGIMSEY (1896) GIBBS - on Paddy's Creek 16 miles NW of Morganton; Post Office established pre- 1883; also covered by Lake James 1916; MERCHANTS IN 1890 - Joshua GIBBS & S.A. MCCALL GLEN ALPINE STATION - ("station" dropped from name in 1896); Incorporated 1883; 6 miles W of Morganton; Called "Turkeytail" at first, then "Sigmonsburg"; early merchants Henry BRINKLEY(1876(, BENNETT & LAUGHRIDGE, A.L. BRIGHT , B.F. KNOTT, M.V.BLACK, J.J.SIGMON, J.T. BRIGHT, T.S. BRIGHT(1896), GOLD - on Canoe Creek in NW Burke HENNESSEE- in Brindletown area; Post office estab. 1902 HILDEBRAN - originally called "62 Mile Siding"; Incorporated 1899; named for J.A. Hildebran; in 1895 A.Y. SIGMON set up saw mill & store JONAS RIDGE - post office estab. pre-1870; aprox. 24 miles NW of Morganton; E. M. BARNES' store there in 1877 JOY - post office in operation 1884; LINVILLE RIVER - (later "Linville Store" ); had post office early as 1827; merchants in 1884- C. ALBERT SPENCER, A. FRANK SOMERS, & NOBLITT BROS. MORGANTON - ; was variously called MORGAN, MORGANSBOROUGH,MORGANTOWN; named for Gen. Daniel Morgan; post office established 1794; County Seat PARK HILL - 2 miles west of Glen Alpine; post office there in 1877 PEARSON - 9 miles S of Connelly Springs; had post office pre-1885 & Amos HUFFMAN'S store & J.Q. VanHorn's store PENELOPE - in 1887 located on Burke side of Catawba/Burke line; was site of an academy in 1886; post office in 1888 PERKINSVILLE - post office established 1837; in Northern Burke on John's River; in 1884 was location of Romulus P. LAXTON'S store & boarding houses owned by J. Thadeus Perkins and Alfred PERRY PIEDMONT SPRINGS - on Upper Creek in NW Burke; was site of 19th century resort hotel; post office there in 1869 ROLLINS - post office in 1881; SHELL - community in Linville Township; thought to be on Paddy's Creek SHOUP'S FORD - site of post office in 1876; J.G. Proctor's store there in 1896 TABLE ROCK- post office there in 1875; 10 miles NW of Morganton; early merchants - J.F. RABB, HALL & SPAINHOUR, RECTOR & HEMPHILL, T.C. WAKEFIELD, J.L. SISK, F.C. FERGUSON, L. A. RAMSOUR, J.M. STAMEY, THOMAS BRANCH. VAL DOR (VALDA) - on headwaters of Silver Creek VALDESE - settled in 1893 by Waldenses( settlers who had migrated from high vallies of Cottian Alps, sw of Turin, Italy in the Province of Piedmonte, at the border of France).; some surnames of this group were: GIRAUD, GUIGOU, MICOL, PONS, REFOUR, RICHARD, TRON, MARTINAT, BOUCHARD, COISON, GARROU, GAYDOU, GRILL, GRISET,GUIGOU, HUGON, JACUMIN, JAHIER, TEGER, LONG, MARTINA, MEYTRE, MONET, MOURGLIA, PASCAL, PERROU, PEYRET, PEYRONNEL, PROCHET, RIBET, SALVAGEOT, VINAY. WARLICK (WARLICK'S MILL) - 6 miles S of Connelly Springs; post office established 1873; merchants - J.F. WARLICK (1884) and R.C. HEAVNER (1896) WORRY - approx. 8 miles NW of Morganton; post office there in 1888; merchants - FORNEY BROS.(1896) WORTMAN - post office there in 1883; on Jacob's Creek in Lower Fork Township
