The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) 6 September 1898
The Governor has pardoned Phillip Williams, a white convict sent up from Burke
county four years ago for manslaughter. He was sent up, along with Synvanus
Morrow for killing Wm Crawsby, while they were all drunk. Morrow served only one
year. He was pardoned by Governor Carr. Williams' pardon was recommended by the
judge who tried the case, the solicitor who prosecuted, and the jury who
convicted him. He is forty years old. He left yesterday afternoon for his home
in the mountains.
