Bute County, NC - Will of George Rose, 1778 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the name of God Amen, I George Rose of the County of Bute in the Province of North Carolina being weak in body, but sound in mind and memory, praised be to God, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following Primius - First and principally I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God, my maker hoping through the meritorious death of Jesus Christ my saviour to receive free pardon for all my sins past and my body to be buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter nominated Item - I leave and bequeath to my loving wife all my possessions during her life together with one negro man named Sam and also all my stock of all kinds, but if my said wife should marry, her husband shall pay rent to the value of the plantation and that rent to be divided among all my children, except William and James Rose, and my will further is that what little stock my sons William Rose and George Rose shall have the stock they now have Item - I give and devise all my land lying on this side the creek to my son James Rose after the death of his mother, and if he should die without heir lawfully begotten of his body my desire is that his part of the land shall go to my son Benjamin and George equally between them both Item - I give and devise all my land lying over the creek to my son William Rose, and if he should die before he comes of age or have lawful issue from his body that his part of the said land to go to my next oldest son George Rose I nominate and appoint my loving wife whole & sole executor of this my last will and testament revoking disannulling and making void all other wills and testaments before made. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty sixth day of February one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven George R. (his x mark) Rose {Seal} Signed, sealed & delivered in the presence of Thos Newman Thomas Wilson Mathew Banks John Hawkins Bute County August Court 1778 This last will and testament of George Rose dec'ed was presented in court and proved by the oaths of Thomas Newman and Thomas Wilson two of the witnesses hereto and the same was ordered to be recorded, and Anne Rose the executor having performed what is usual in such cases. Letters testamentary is granted to her Test: Thos. Machen C.C. North Carolina Warren County I, John D. Newell, Clerk of Superior Court for the aforesaid County and State do herby certify that the foregoing two sheets contain a true and correct copy of the will and the probate thereto of George R.
