Cabarrus County, NC - John Paul Barringer Captain John Paul Barringer Biography John Paul Barringer was born in Wuttenburg, Germany, on June 4, 1721. He came to America when he was 22 years old and landed in Philadelphia in 1743. He was very poor, and found employment and a home with Mr. Iseman, whose daughter he later married. Two children, Catherine and John, were born to this union. He moved to North Carolina before the Revolutionary War, and settled in the section now known as the "Dutch Side" of Cabarrus County. He prospered in life, and after some years located on a valuable farm, long known as Popular Grove, on Big Dutch Buffalo Creek, three miles below Mt Pleasant. When well up in years, his wife died. Later he married Catherine Blackwelder. By this wife he had ten children. John Paul Barringer had great force of character, he was prudent and thrifty. In his religious life he was deeply devotional; and in public affairs he was originally a true friend of the House of Hanover, and a captain of the Royal Militia. When Governor Tryon made a tour of the West in 1768, he visited Captain Barringer. When the struggle for liberty came, Captain Barringer sidely strongly with the Patriots. He was too old for regular service, but was otherwise active in the cause of freedom and independance. During the war he was taken prisoner by the "Fanning Tories", and carried to Camden, South Carolina., where he was imprisoned for several months.
