Evidently he didn't like the name Nixon, and I am told that he sometimes went by P. Nicholas Hopkins. His daughter, Regina Loretta always referred to him in her writing as Phenice Nixon, in spite of his self- appointed nickname. Phenice was born Aug 24, 1831 to James Edward Hopkins and Mary Ellis. He first married Margaret Elvira Beaver on July 17, 1855 in Cabarrus County (daughter of Isaac Beaver and Elizabeth Eagle). They had a daughter named Alice. Margaret died July 19, 1856 and is buried at St. John's Lutheran Church in Concord. Then he married Margaret's sister, Mary "Mattie" Sapphire Beaver on Oct 27, 1856 in Cabarrus County. Phenice and Mattie had 13 children. Phenice died in January 1892 of a broken neck resulting from being thrown from his horse while riding to church in a driving snow-storm. (I guess the moral of this story is to stay home from church when the winter storms hit.) Both he and Mattie are buried at the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, just a few miles from St. John's Church.
