He was a farmer in Cabarrus County before the War. Young joined the 7th North Carolina as captain of B company in May 1861. He rose to the rank of major on June 27, 1862. Young was captured at Frederick Maryland in September 1862 and exchanged in November. He resigned due to ill health on January 6, 1863, but returned to serve as an aide to General Hoke. While so serving, Young was killed at Petersburg on July 8, 1864. He was buried in the churchyard at Poplar Tent Presbyterian in Cabarrus County.
