JOSIAH GILMER, aged 64 years. It is but simple justice to the character of the deceased to say that he filled with peculiar uprightness all the offices of neighbor, citizen, and friend and passed the "narrow house" appointed for all living through the scenes of a life more than ordinarily chequered and eventful. In early life, he volunteered his services and marched as a gallant soldier to protect the defenseless frontiers of Alabama and Florida. After the Indians were subdued, he returned to North Carolina, to the home of his ancestors and engaged in the pursuits of peace. But his last years were his best years. About five years before his death he professed the religion of Christ. Under its banner he lived, in its faith he died.
