He had filled various offices in the gift of the people with credit to himself, and usefulness to the public. He was the first Sheriff of the county of Cabarrus and had represented the county in both branches of the State Legislature. He was remarkable for his firmness of purpose and integrity of character; and in all the relations of life, sustained himself as an honest man and good citizen. As a father and husband his private virtues and devoted attachments will only cease to be remembered, when the numerous and respectable family of which he was the head, shall be no more. In public life, while he was decided and firm in his opinions, he was just and liberal in his views and was a republican in practice as well as profession. He died in the triumphs of the Christian faith and with this consolation and the recollection of his many virtues, his name will long be revered and affectionately cherished by his numerous kindred and friends.
