Cabarrus County, NC - Obituary of Philip Hegler, 1854 Carolina Watchman, Salisbury, NC dated 13 April 1854: "Mr. PHILIP HEGLER of Cabarrus County, N.C., was instantly killed on the 23rd of March, by the falling of a tree. He and several other persons were employed in cutting cord wood for Mr. Moses Eagle. About the middle of the day, they cut a tree which lodged upon another. One of the hands then proceeded to cut that also. Mr. H. and several other persons were standing off to one side as they supposed, in a place of safety. In falling, the body of the first tree struck a dead sapling, and threw it in the direction where they were standing, striking Mr. HEGLER on the head and killing him instantly. Mr. H. was in moderate worldly circumstances, an exemplary member of the Ev. Lutheran Church, and an estimable citizen of the community in which he lived. He has left a wife and seven children to mourn over their irreparable loss." ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
