Clayton Obit The Daily Independent Mrs. Opal Clayton (picture included) Kannapolis - Opal Cody Lowder Clayton, 86, of Britthaven of Kannapolis, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Britthaven. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Jackson Park United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member. The Rev. Mary John Dye and the Rev. Larry Barden will officiate, and entombment will follow at the Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the rites. Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. She was born May 11, 1911, in Stanly County, a daughter of the late Lawson Cornelius Lowder and Icie Jane Cody Lowder. At her church, she was a historian and a Sunday school teacher for 50 years. She was a charter member and former president of the Clarice Women’s Club and a charter member of the Junior Women’s Club. She was a member of the Western N.C. Board of Social Concerns of the United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Archives and History of the United Methodist Church district. She was a graduate of Albemarle High School and Woman’s College. An avid musician, she played saxophone and piano and taught piano for more than 50 years. She also worked for Cannon Mills and was society editor for the Daily Independent, 1935-36. She worked as bookkeeper and secretary at Cabarrus Bank and Trust Company and had been a licensed real estate agent since 1973. Her husband, William Joseph Clayton, died Feb. 9, 1983. Survivors include a son, Bill Clayton of Charlotte; four brothers, Arnold Lowder and Lewis Lowder, both of Albemarle, Lawson Lowder of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Elbert Lowder of Sanford; five sisters, Violet Werle of Springfield, VA., Idell Neff of Leesburg, Va., Ramelle McDonald of Jackson, Mich., Louise Cranford of New London and Imogene Dry of Albemarle; two grandchildren; one great- grandchild.
