The letter was informing them of the death of their brother, Hugh, who lived on the Stewart farm on the Yadkin River near Lenoir. N.C. Caldwell County January the 11 Day 1859 Dear Brothers and Sisters I now take the opportunity of dropping you a few lines to let you know how we awl are . We are bad health at this time. Sally and myself is hardly able to get about. Theodore is very sick at this and dont seem to get any better. He was taken last Saturday. Brother Hugh was taken sick the 2 day of this munth at old Miss Steels and died the next Sunday about half after one oclock. The doctor said his disease was the newmonia. Thomas and Theodore was there part of the time during his sickness. He seamed to suffer awl the time. He was taken home and burried to day. James Colletts family is well excep bad coals. John Steels family has been sick but has got better. There is a grildeay (?) of sickness in this country and a good many deaths. Old miss Deavenport the forth day of this month and old William Conly died the 8 day of this month. So no more at presen.
