JONES -- no one submitted more readily and cheerfully to all the duties and hardships of camp life , or had a better influence on those around him. He was one of the few young men who would not accept office (which was frequently tendered to him) although well qualified for it by a thorough military training -- preferring to share the duties of his friends, who were privates in the first company from Caldwell County. He was sent to Virginia in August 1861 in the 22nd Regiment, then commanded by the lamented PETTIGREW -- sharerd the dangers of the campaigns of '62 -- was wounded at Shepardstown, on the retreat of our army from Maryland, but was absent from duty but a few weeks. In March last, he was transferred, by request, to Company I, 26th Regiment, North Carolina Troops, where he served until on the 1st of July, in the battle of Gettysburg, Pa., while pressing forward with his usual intrepidity, in advance of his company, and near to the enemy's line, he received a mortal wound and fell in a few feet of his brother, MAJOR JONES, and about the same time when the gallant BURGWYNN was shot down. He died in the hospital at Gettysburg a few days after, in the 20th year of his age. He lies buried in the land of the stranger and enemy -- but his soldierly conduct -- his frank and generous nature -- made many friends who cannot forget him until they too sleep their "last long sleep."
