J. Y Smitherman
Taken By Death

   Joseph Young Smitherman, 73, of 109 Conley street (sic) died at 5:05 
o’clock this morning at his home.  He was a retired farmer.
   Born July 4, 1881 in Watauga County he was the son of the late William 
Alexander and Carolyn Palmer Smitherman.
   Surviving are three sons, George, Louis and Grady Smitherman of Boone; six 
daughters, Miss Beulah Smitherman and Mrs. Charlie May of Lenoir, Mrs. Spencer 
May and Mrs. Groydon Harmon of Watauga County, Mrs. Claude Martin of Tennessee 
and Mrs. William C. Jones of Illinois; a brother, Hardy Smitherman of Sugar 
Grove; two sisters, Mrs. John Ward and Mrs. Spencer Dishman of Zionsville 
(sic); 21 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
   Funeral services were incomplete early this afternoon.  Lenoir Funeral Home 
is in charge of arrangements.
