My wife to have the use and possession of my house and plantation whereon I now reside with all furniture and lands and such stock necessary for her support, and at her death to pass to my son Laben Lawrence. To son Jennings three hundred dollars, to be put at interest for his support and one bed and furniture. To my daughter Rachel Piner fifty dollars. The residue of my estate to be for the children of my daughter Rachel Piner, and the children of my deceased son Asa. David W. Whitehurst to be executor. Witnessed: John Lawrence, David w. Lawrence, William H. Whitehurst. Watson Lawrence (seal). Codicil-March 14 1860: My son Jennings to have a life estate with my wife in the property, and then to son Laben. And my desire is that David W. Lawrence shall take the superintendence of my said son Jennings and use the funds left in the hands of my executor as stated in the said foregoing will. In testimony hereof I the said Watson Lawrence to herewith set my hand and seal this 14th day of March 1860. Additional Comments: It is obvious that Jennings Lawrence, son of old Watson, was either physically or mentally handicapped. The 1860 census shows him still living in his elderly father's household at age 52. Watson Lawrence died in the spring of 1866 at the advanced age of 89, incredible for that time frame. It is not known why Jennings's brother Laben was not assigned to take care of his brother. David W. Lawrence, assigned as guardian, was only a kinsman of the Watson Lawrence family.
