The will was written in 1789 when he was of Carteret County, but probated in 1794 in Jones County. In the name of God Amen I Thomas Mead of the County of Carterite being in Bodily health And Sound Mind And Memory But Calling to mind that it is Appointed Once for all Men to die do Make this My last will in Maner & form as followeth first I Resign My Soul to - to god who gave it And My Body I Comit to the dust of which it was Made to be buried In a decent Christian like Maner And As for those worldly goods which it hath bin Please god to Bestow On Me I leave in Maner And form As followeth 1 My will And desire is that My wife Hanah Mead should have One third Part of all my land during her Natural life likewise I give And Bequeath to my wife Hanah Mead Six head of Cattle allso two horses Named Duncirk And Rosling And two feather beds & Furniture with all my Stock of hogs to her And her heirs And Asigns forever. 2d I lend My wife Hannah Mead all the Rest of my Perishable Estate Except those things hereafter mentioned willed to my Children during her Natural life ---------- 3d I give And Bequeath to My son Thomas Mead all My land in Carterite County by Estimate Two hundred And forty nine Acres allo One feather bed And firniture two horses Named Ruffin and Brandy with the Rest of the Stock And Other Articles with he Rcd of Me At his to them his heirs & Asigns forever ------- 4th I give And Bequeath to my Daughter Tryphena West One feather bed And furniture One Mair Called fancy two head Sheep with Other Articles which she Rcd At her Mariage to her her heirs And Asigns forever --------- 5th I give and Bequeath to My daughter Hanah Collins One feather bed And firniture two head of Cattle One Mair two head of Sheep with Other Articles She Recd at her Mariage to her and her heirs & Assigns forever -------- 6th I give And Bequeath to My Daughter Barbarah Mead three head of Cattle One Mair One Feather Bed And firniture two head Sheep And all the hogs Marked in her Mark to her her heirs And Asigns forever ----------- 7th I give And Bequeath to My Daughter Rachel Mead One feather Bed And firniture One Mair One Cow And Calf And One two year Old heifer And two head of Sheep ----- 8th My will And Desire is that those things Before Mentioned which is lent to my wife Hanah Mead that she should Dispose of As she May think propper to Each Or Either of my Children At her Own Discretion ------------ 9th And lastly I Nominate And Appoint My Son Thomas Mead And My Neighbor James Watson Executors of this My last will And testament Revoking all Other wills Before Made by Me Acknowledging this And this Only to be My last will And testament As A Witness I have Signed And Sealed And Acknowledged the Same - This tenth of January 1789 In the Presents of Thomas MeeD {seal} A Dudley [original signature] his William x Hatchell Mark Fanney Dudley [The following is written on the back of the original will] State of North Carolina Jones County Court february term 1794 Then was the within last will and testament of Thomas Mead decd duly proved in open Court by the Oath of William Hatchell one of the subscribing witnesses agreeable to Law and ordered to be recorded at the same time Thomas Mead the Executor therein named Qualified as such agreeable to Law.
