A Family Record Which Goes Back 725 Years to Ancient England. Reidsville, April 26 - Major W.H. Watlington, of Caswell County, was here today en route to High Point. He showed the Observer correspondent the family record and coat of arms of the Watlingtons, a history of 68 pages of manuscript. It dated back 735 years. The derivation of the name "Watlington" is recorded in a book treating on the origin of old English names, transcribed by A.L. Watlington, now of California, AD, 1900, from records at Lynn, county of Norfolk, England. The record shows that the Watlingtons were the sons of King Waetla, and that Waetla, or Watlea, is probably a diminutive of Watt, or Watts, meaning sharp, keen; Watlington, the prefix, is the Anglo-Saxon Watling as a patronymic denoting that an Anglo-Saxon filial settlement was founded here by the Watlings. The Watlings must have been an illustrious race, as they gave name to "Watling street," the great ancient road leading from Dover by London to Cordigan. It was built by the Romans in the time of Caesars. Major Watlington also has in possession a photograph of a handsome monument erected in England to the memory of the late William Watlington. Major Watlington's memory is great, and it is a genuine pleasure to converse with him.
