Chief Justice Benjamin James Lea died March, 15th, at Brownsville, Haywood County, Tenn. Judge Lea was a native of Caswell County, born January 1st, 1833; graduated at Wake Forest 1852, and moved soon after to Tennessee; taught school for a few years and at the same time studied law, in which profession he soon acquired a deserved eminence. He was Attorney General for eight years, Speaker of the Senate, and at his death Chief Justice of the State, having been elected by the largest majority ever given in Tennessee. He was an able jurist and a Christian gentleman. This State and his alma mater, Wake Forest, have reason to be proud of him.
