FROM STATE ARCHIVES BOOK R, PAGE 298. I, Garland Blackwell, of the county of Caswell and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind and memory, but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say) First, that my Executors hereinafter named shall provide for my body a decent burial suitable the wishes of my relatives and friends and pay all funeral expenses together with my just debts however and to whomsoever oweing out of the Money that may first come into their hand as a part or parcel of my estate. (Item) I give and devise to my beloved wife, Sarah Blackwell, one hundred and fifty acres of land to be set out by metes and bounds in the north side of the tract whereon I now live so as to include my mansion house, out houses, and other improvements in that boundary to have and to hold to her the said Sarah Blackwell for and during the term of her natural life in satisfaction for an in lieu of her dower and third of and in all my real estate. I give and devise to my youngest son, James S. Blackwell all the tract of land whereon I now live supposed to be three hundred and seventy five acres (except the life estate of wife devised in a former Item of this my will) to have and to hold to him and his heirs in fee simple forever. (Item) I give and bequeath to my said beloved wife, Sarah Blackwell Two Beds and Bedsteads & furniture all the house hold and kitchen furniture, Ten Head of Hogs choice 1 Horse choice Two cows and calves choice one Beef choice one Buggy and harness one carryall and harness, Two ploughs one ....?...gear 2 hoes one mattock one ...?... twenty-five barrels corn two stacks fodder two stacks oats one loom and harness .....?.... and shuttles. Fifteen bushels wheat. (Item) I give to my said beloved wife Two Negros a girl named Margaret and a boy named Bash during her natural life and at her death I give the said Girl Margaret and her increase to my youngest son James S. Blackwell to him and his heirs and assigns forever. (Item) I will and device after the death of my wife the said Boy Bash I give to my son John S. Blackwell to him and his heirs forever. It is my will and desire that all the above property bequeathed to my wife Sarah Blackwell are hers during her natural life only---- and at her death all that is not otherwise disposed of in the above items shall be sold and equally divided between all my children (viz) my son Robert Blackwell, my son Joseph Blackwell my son John S Blackwell my son James S Blackwell my daughter Jane Watlington and my daughter Elizabeth Howard children representing one share with the above named children in equal proportion share and share and share alike. It is my will and desire at my death that all the residue of my estate not otherwise disposed of in the above items shall be sold and the debts oweing to me all collected and all the money which I may have on hand shall be equally divided among my aforesaid children and Elizabeth Howard's children representing one share--after making all advancements equal which they have heretofore received---- And lastley I do hereby constitute and appoint my Two sons, John S. Blackwell and James S. Blackwell my lawful Executors to all intents and purposes to execute this my last will and testament according to the true intent and meaning of the same and every part and clause thereof--Hereby revoking and declaring utterly void all other wills & Testaments by me heretofore made.
