The Will of Lawrence VanHook, 1797.  (Caswell Co., NC)

  In the name of God, Amen. I appoint this to be my last
will disposing of my whole estate Real and personal at the
time and times as may happen or be that is to say.

 Item as follows, first and foremost I appoint and order all
my debts charges and expenitures to be paid to the person or
persons whom any thing is due to be paid out of my estate at
large.

 Item (two) I appoint that my well beloved wife Mary have
Mansion house and about 100 acres of land to be laid off
north and south of Joseph Carneys line and to extend East
for compliment and also her negroes brought to me with her
bed and all other goods she brought which negroes & goods my
heirs and executors are not to lay any claim to as also I
allow her to have provision for her own family for one year
and anything further of opinion or discressions may direct
and all the above land to be in her possession  during the
time she continues to be my widow, but by intermarriage to
return tio my children.

 3rd item I appoint that in case Zachariah Jones and his
wife Elizabeth die without issue either begotten by the two
above mentioned, or by death and after intermarriage none
begotten, then in that case a certain negoe woman named
Nancy which I lent to said Zachariah and Elizabeth shall
return and belong to my five children, or successors that is
to
say: (He had also a daughter Elizabeth, here apparently
disowned) Loyde Vanhook and William Lea, Aron Vanhook,
Lourance Vanhook, and Thomas Horgas or either of their
children on case of either of their death, but be it
remembered and noticed that if and any in case that either
of the two have a child or children that then and in that
case the said Nancy and her Children shall be equally
divided between either of them two and my other children
before mentioned.

 4th item- I appoint and desire that my son Aron have
allowed him about 50 Dollars in value of some thing as may
be agreed on at the time of settlement.

 5th item - I will and bequeth to my five children as before
mentioned Loyde Vanhook son, and William Lea son in law,
Aron Vanhook son, Lourance Vanhook son, Thomas Horges son in
law all Revertions and Remainders of whole estate Real &
personal aftercleared of charge to be equally and justly
divided between my five children as here mentioned or their
children in case Death.

 6th item. and I do appoit Ratify and confirm Loyde Vanhook
and William Lea my Executors and agents to let and contract
all the business by me placed in their hands and power
nothing doubting their prudent care under God. I ratify this
to to be my last will in all cases leaving the event to God
for direction.
