Submitted by: Pat Graves Reagan pgreagan@execpc.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOLD FUNERAL TODAY FOR SIDNEY DURANT HOUK Special to the Charlotte Observer Newton , April 4, 1931 Sidney Durant Houk 78, died at home in North Newton yesterday after an illness of 10 days. He is survived by his wife and 11 children and 22 great grand children and 11 great great children. Sidney Durant Houk died at his home here early Friday leaving his wife Netta Kate Bradley Houk. Early in life he was confirmed a member of the Lutheran church and remained firm in his faith until death. In 1894 he became a member of Beth-Eden Lutheran Church where he has remained a faithful and consistent and highly esteemed member. The surviving children are: Mrs Mary Hathcock and Lucille Houk of Knoxville Tennessee Mrs Emma Thornburg of Kannapolis, Mrs Ruth Melton, of Lenoir, Misses Margaret and Rebecca Houk of Charlotte, Mr. Clay Houk Mr. J. Macon Houk, Mrs Edith Lominac, Mrs Lillie Sherrill and Miss Lois Houk of Newton. Three sisters, Mrs Mary Frye and Miss Mildred Houk, of Hickory and Mrs Emma Seabock of Elizabethton Tennessee..The funeral services were held Sunday at 3:00 o'clock at the Beth-Eden Lutheraln church, conducted by the pastor Rev. A. R. Beck While the organ played very softly "Lead Kindly Light" the body was brought into the church by the following pall -bearers: J.C. Sigmon, R. G. Burguress, Allen Travis , J. C. Rudisill, Vance Clark, Herbert Smith , Ray Cline, After the service the organ played "Abide with Me" the body was carried to the cemetery where the Masonic order took charge. Mr Houk was laid to rest amid a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and their friends their was a Large and very beautiful floral offering , symbolic of the and in appreciation of the beautiful life Mr.. Houk had lived and set the example of. "Be thou Faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life".
