Book 1, page 136           Last Will and Testament of James Reed


In the name of God.Amen. I, James Reed of the County of Catawba and the State of
North Carolina being old and afflicted and expecting the soon depart this life,
but Sound of mind blessed by God, do make this my last will and testament.
1st I will my soul to god who gave it hoping Say full (?)resurrection at the
great day of Judgment. 
2nd I will that my body Shall be buried in a decent and Christian manner 3 I
will and bequeath that all my Just debts Shall be paid. 4th The remainder of my
worldly Estate both real and personal I will and bequeath to my four children
named as follows: Polly Beaty, Martha Roberson Elizabeth Bradburn and William H.
Reed. 5th My real Estate I allow my Executors to sell at private or publick sale
which ever may a majority lagaties may agree and my Executors to make deeds to
the purchasers or purchases (?) and my whole estate to be equally divided
between my four children above named Including every Spurs (?) of property money
or anything else after all is sold by my Executors with the exception of my old
negro pash (?) Which I allow to go to any place She chooses provided they will
take her of if She Shall become a charge and person will not take care of her it
is my will that a Sum of money not exceeding Sixty dollars Shall be retained by
my executor for said negro Comfort if needed, if She should die and the sum not
Expended that to be paid over to my four Children or their heirs. (I) appoint
Elisha Sherrill my whole executor of this my last Will and Testament, revoking
all former wills made by me and acknowledge this to be my last will in witness
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this 26 February 1849.
