Deed of Gift - Phoebe (Phebe) Clark - 1794 - Chatham Co. Record of
Estates

Know all men by these presents that I Phebe Clark of the county of
Chatham and State of North Carolina in consideration of the good Will
Love and affection which I have and bear unto my Infant Grand Daughter
Phebe Mott daughter of Joseph Mott deceased late of the County of
Cumberland have given granted and delivered (previous to the signing of
these presents unto the said Phebe Mott a certain negroe Girl called
Sally aged about Eight years old and I do firmly by these presents give
grant and deliver the said Negroe girl to have and to hold to the only
proper use & behoof of her the said Phebe Mott her Heirs and assigns
forever.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand and seal the  ____
day of February 1794

                February Session 1794 proved in open Court by the Oath
of Wm.. Meroney.
  [ Note:  Wm. Meroney became the stepfather, if not at this time, of
Phebe Mott) Her mother being Winnefred Webb Clark, daughter of Phoebe
(Phebe) Jefferson Clark, the wife of Capt. Alexander Clark. Winnefred
Webb b. about 1770, married Dr. Joseph Mott abt. 1790 + and Dr. Mott
died before 1798. Winnefred married  (possibly in 1794/5) Rev. William
Britton Meroney, of whose family the Meroney Methodist Church in
Pittsboro, is named.]
