Pickard Ten Carroll County Nov 5th 1842 Dear Brother and sister I will fulfill my promise I made to you when at my house I and my family are not well yet. I am upon? the missing? hond tho feal very mutch indisposed to day the Children ie Some of them are mending Some are not mending mutch yet I am some what up on abaut? wheather I will go to North Carolina an not tho if I go I will be at your house between 20 ett or 25th of this month prepared to go on hors backe as the man I engd? and taulking with has declared going if I sould not be than by the times above mentioned if you intend going it well you need not wait any longer for me tho if I am able to stand the Jorney and noting of serious nature take place I presume that I will try to go. I am fearfull thare is something rong as they hav not ?? roat me any thing abut it if I was certain thare would be any thing more than peas and harmony and a Eaqual divison between and a mongst all I would hav nothing to do with it at tall -- I hav bin making a calculation of what I received of my Father in his lifetime I Rd most of it at his valuation - six hundred dollars is near about what $600 I got ---- tho in the calculation I make it five five hundred and ninty seven dollars and some cts yours with Respect Wm Crutchfield lt it be five hundred if I shall not come and you go on thare you take this letter and tell I wish to know something about my Father dethe my Mother situation in this life or wheather she has any hop of enjoying happiness In the most? till then I yet ative? and that thare eighteen long years of troble and absence from them has not made me a heathen man nor a wild beast I no I am not the prow ling Bare nor the howling wolf nor the screaming Panther nor hooting owl -- I do think very hard of them indeed so no more Wm. Crutchfield Notes: 1. The above letter, hand written by William Crutchfield, was post marked at Huntingdon, Carroll County, TN on 8 Nov. 1842 and was addressed to Wm. P. Pickard at Mount Pleasant, Maury Co., TN. 2. Wm. P. Pickard married Milley Crutchfield, sister of this William Crutchfield. 3. William and Milley were children of John and Nancy Ann McPherson Crutchfield of Orange Co., NC. 4. The occasion is related to the Jan 1842 death of John Crutchfield the father of William and Milley. 5. William Crutchfield and Wm. P. Pickard evidently made the trip back to Orange Co. NC because their signatures appear on one of the Orange Co. NC estate documents dated 30 December 1842. 6. This William Crutchfield was born about 1797 in Orange Co., NC and migrated to Carroll Co., TN about 1824 with Elizabeth Chambers, his wife. William died before 1850 in Carroll Co. TN. Their Orange Co. NC marriage bond date is 3 May 1822. Their children were: Sarah J., James H., John A., William C., Wilbourn F., Benjamin D. and Archibald D. Crutchfield. 7. The original copy of this letter is filed with the 1842 Orange Co. NC estate records of John Crutchfield at the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, NC.
