John L. Haughton The Standard of Raleigh, Sept. 24, 1862 DIED, on the 17th inst., at the residence of his father, LAWRENCE J. HAUGHTON, at the Gulf, Chatham County, of typhoid fever, 1st LIEUTENANT JOHN LAWRENCE HAUGHTON, aged 21 years and four months. While a member of the senior class at Chapel Hill University, in April, 1861, he enlisted as a private in the Orange Guards, and went with that compant to Fort Macon. In May, 1862, his health gave way and he was most reluctantly forced to resign his commission. He returned home to Chatham and after his health became partially restored organized a company of Partisan Rangers, of which he was elected 1st Lieutenant. The fatigue incident to this, prostrated him, and when his company left he was compelled to remain at home." Additional Comments: Note: The text, American Civil War Regiments gives the date of death as 18, September, 1861. The above date is likely to be the correct one since it was probably submitted by a relative.
