C., March 5, 1844. He was then 81 years of age and therefore born in 1763. He was drafted in the service in 1781 when he was very young and living in Northhampton County, a short time before the battle of Guilford Court House. He was in that battle and in the battles of Hobkirk's Hill, and Augusta. He served twelve months under his brother, Anthony Armistead, when he was taken prisoner in the battle of Ninety-six. He was put on board a British prison ship, carried to England and landed on the Isle of Jersey where he was very sick. When he recovered he was sent to Spithead where he remained until "peace was made." He was then sent to Havre de Grace in France. The American Consul there let him have some money and a "pas" (pasport?). He went to to L'Orient and from there on an American ship to Boston where he arrived in May or June, 1783.
