William Edwards, Application file R3263. Widows Pension Application made by Rebecca Brewer Edwards, age 77, on 12 August 1837. William Edwards died on 20 April 1837. He had previously been given a pension on 17 Aug 1832 while a resident of Robertson County, TN. Rebecca married William Edwards on 25 July 1775. Applications mentions three small children and much hardship during the war but does not mention the children by name. An official went to her home to take her statement so she was apparently unable to travel. She made her mark on the paper so she probably could not write. In the file is a statement by John Edwards, brother of William. John, aged 73, lived in Simson County, KY. He was present at the wedding of William and Rebecca. They were married in Chatham County, NC by a Justice of the Peace whose name may have been Clark. In a letter dated May 21, 1935 someone named Maybelle Delamar, Raleigh, NC requested Wm Edwards Rev. War. Records. Records were not sent but a summary was provided, which included: 1. born in 1757 in Orange County, NC, names of parents not given. 2. lived in Chatham County, NC on Haws River when he enlisted. 3. served 3 months as private in Captain Abraham Allen’s Company, Colonel Lytle’s NC Regiment and was in frequent skirmishes with the Tories. 4. enlisted again in Sept 1778 in Capt Tavender Mack’s Co. and was in several skirmishes with Tories – one at Brush Creek. 5. enlisted again in Dec 1778 or Jan 1779. Served one year as a minute man under Captain William Douglas and William James in Colonel Griffis’ NC Regiment. 6. served 3 months as private in Capt William Jones Company in Colonel Wade’s NC Regiment. 7. Discharged 27 March 1781. He returned to his home in Chatham County, NC and while in his own house, the Tories surrounded the house, took him prisoner, and carried him to Hillsborough, NC and turned him over to the British. He made his escape in about 3 days, returned home, and did not enter service again. 8. On 10 December 1838 a pension of $70 per year was given to "children of William Edwards". NOTE: If the widow survived, why was a pension given to the children? There were several other affidavits on file but no new information. NOTE: from the records, there was apparently another William Edwards from Orange County and the records of the two were somewhat entangled.
