Isaac H. [?] Brooks in Hickory Mountain township. The grave is covered with a slab of soapstone one foot thick and six feet long, the surface of which is entirely covered with letters of various forms and sizes rudely cut, which have been deciphered by our young friend, W. E. Brooks, and read as follows: “Here lies intered [sic] the body of Dr. James McCarroll. He was born in the County of Ardmagh [sic], in the Kingdom of Ireland, in the year 1734, and departed this life on the 25th day of Oct., 1777, in the 43rd year of his age: he was remarkable for his general knowledge of the arts and sciences. This monument was erected by Elizabeth McCarroll, his widow, the 16th of July, 1778.” We doubt if half a dozen of our countrymen ever before heard of Dr. McCarroll, and yet he was one of the most prominent citizens of Chatham in the last century. His daughter married Patrick St. Lawrance who kept a tavern in the “old yellow house” at this place, nearly a hundred years ago, and whose name was given to the post office, near which Dr. McCarroll is buried. If any of their descendants now live in Chatham we are not aware of it.
