Chatham County, NC - Richard Kennon, 1808 Edenton, NC June 23 On Saturday last a man calling himself Richard Kennon of Chatham County in this state was detected in endeavouring to pass counterfeit Bank Bills of the Branch Banks of New York, Charleston and Savannah, and Bills of the currency of this state. The Bank Bills were exceedingly well executed. He had been lurking in town a day or two on pretence of purchasing Negroes and had endeavoured to exchange the above Bills at several stores; but being suspected he made off when he was pursued, taken and brought before the civil authority. On examining him Notes of the aforesaid Banks, to the amount of 250 dollars were found in his possession with a number of Forty Shilling Bills, all counterfeits; together with 100 dollars in good paper currency. A hundred dollar Bill of the Branch Bank of Charleston, which he denied having, was found concealed in his watch and the Forty Shilling Bills, in the lining of his hat. After an impartial and patient hearing he was committed to goal, from thence to be conveyed in a few days to the city of Raleigh. On Monday last, Mr. Hoskins, the Sheriff of Chowan, brought Richard Kennon and lodged him in the goal of Raleigh. We believe that Mr. Kennon heretofore bore a good character in his county.
