D., 1859, and A. L. 5859, the following resolutions were introduced by Brother, L. J. MERRITT and adopted with unanimous approval of the Lodge: Whereas, the death of DR. SPENCER MCCLENAHAN, long a faithful, true and devoted member of this Lodge, has this day occurred in our midst; and whereas it is fitting, though a sad duty, in recording the death of a worthy brother, to express our sense of the loss to the Lodge and our common brotherhood, and also our appreciation of the character of our deceased brother, not only as a Mason, but as a man; therefore, Resolved, That in the death of DR. MCCLENAHAN, the State has lost a public spirited and useful citizen, who, whether a member of the General Assembly or in the private walks of life, devoted his time, energy, talents and means to every scheme which an honest and fixed energy of purpose and a zealous spirit for public improvement convinced him would advance her interest, promote her welfare and elevate her character, that the community in which he lived has lost a bright example of honesty, truthfulness, sincereness and liberality, which all should imitate -- but few equal -- tried in the furnace of misfortune, his principles, like gold from the refiner's crucible, came out the brighter and purer -- that the profession of which he was a member, and to whose arduous and active labors he fell a victim, has lost one of whom they may well be proud -- ever kind and attentive to patients, skilled in the treatment of disease, true and liberal to his professional brethen, a friend to the fatherless and the widow, his ear ever open to the cry of distress, and his skill at the service of the poor; that his numerous friends have lost a cherished and valued companion, and his family a kind and loving protector; that as a lodge and brotherhood of Masons, we feel deeply the loss of such a man and of so worthy a Mason, illustrating and adorning in his life so many of the true and proved principles of the fraternity. Resolved, That to the family of our deceased brother, we tender our deep felt sympathies in their bereavement -- that the secretary be directed to deliver to them a copy of these resolutions, after having duly entered them upon the minutes of the Lodge. Resolved, That we will wear the usual badge of mourning for 30 days and on tomorrow will attend in our Lodge capacity and bury our deceased brother with sad hearts in obedience to his last request. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent for publication to the Raleigh Standard, with request that Raleigh Register and Oxford Leisure Hour publish them also. JAS. THOMPSON, SEC'Y. W. S.
