TOOMER We regret to hear of the death at Pittsboro of HON. JOHN D. TOOMER, a distinguished citizen of this State. Learned, incorruptable, a high-toned gentleman, a profound jurist, an eloquent speaker and a ready writer. JUDGE TOOMER was a native of this town (Fayetteville), and graduated with distinction at Chapel Hill. Elected as a Judge of the Superior Court of Law and Equuity in 1818, he resigned the office the year following.-- Many years subsequent, he was appointed by the Governor and Council, a Judge of the Superior Court, but the Legislature not confirming this appointment, he resigned. In 1831-32, he represented Cumberland County in the Senate. In 1836, he was again elected a Judge of the Superior Court, and after holding the office four years, resigned on account of ill health. For a number of years, he resided at Pittsboro, where he died. JUDGE TOOMER was 72 years of age.
