Written: 1821 Wills -- Chatham Co., N.C. 1821 WILL OF JOHN AVENT OF AVENT'S FERRY, CHATHAM CO., N.C., In the name of God, Amen, this twentieth day of July, one thousand, eight hundred and twenty-one, I John Avent of Chatham County and State of North Carolina, being in a low state of health but perfect in mind and memory, there, I make this my last will and testament, the matter and form as follows: First I recommend my soul to God that is and my Body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like manner, and tuching such worldly goods as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give and dispose of the same in the following manner Viz. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter, Sally Cox one negro girl named Viney and one negro boy named Hardy. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter, Patsy Cox what money she has received for a negro man named Nead. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter, Elizabeth Albritain a negro girl named Fille and one mare and all my stock of cattle except the choice cow and calf. Item the 4th I give and bequeath to my son, William Avent one negro man named Pompey and a negro woman named Sal and one colt and all my stock of Hogs. Item the 5th I give and bequeath to my daughter Nancy Raines one negro man named Dave. Item 6 I give and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca Thomas one negro girl named Milly and one negro boy named Jerry and one cow and calf to the choice of all I have. Item the 7th I give and bequeath to my daughter Polly Partiridge one negro girl named Rachel and one negro boy named Umphrey. I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally Cox and Rebekah Thomas two negro children named Leah and Ranah to be valued and equally divided between the two for the same Sally Cox must pay Patsy Cox my daughter one hundred dollars and Rebekah must pay Nancy Raines one hundred dollars. I also give to my negro Sal my Bead and furniture. The balance of my property to be sold and equally divided among all my children. I do appoint William Avent and Doctor Thomas Cottrell executors to my last Will and Testament.
