In the name of God, Amen. I, John Brantly, of the County of Chatham & province of North Carolina, being weak in body, but in perfect mind and memory, but calling to mind the uncertain of this life & the mortality of the body, do make & ordain this to be my last will & testament, viz. First, I recommend my body to the dust to be buried in a Christian like manner & my soul into the hands of God that gave it, in hope of its resurrection to eternal life & tuching such worldly estate as has pleased God to bless me with, I desire to give & dispose in manner & form following: I. Item. I leave the use of my plantation, two cows and a grey mare, three sows and pigs, and ten barrels of corn, and two Negroes, Pat and Job, to my loving wife enduring her lifetime & at her decease for the plantation to go to my son Benjamin, & the two Negroes & other estate to be equal divided between my children. II. Item. I give & bequeath to my granddaughter Rana Higdon five pounds to be paid out of my estate, & no more, to her and her heirs forever. III. Item. I give & bequeath to my grandson Phillip Higdon five pounds to be paid out of my estate, & no more, to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my grandson Charles Higdon five pounds to be paid out of my estate, & no more, to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my grandson Edmund Jones twenty shillings, & no more, to be paid out of my estate to him & his heirs forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my loving son Joseph Brantly, three Negroes, a wench named Nan, & a Negro girl named June and a Negro girl named Tuck, to him & his heirs forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my loving son John Brantly, two Negroes, named Bridget and Jacob, to him & his heirs forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my loving son William Brantly, two Negroes, named Jack and Pationce, to him & his heirs forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my loving son Benjamin Brantly, two Negroes, named Dick & Nance, to him & his heirs forever. Item. I give & bequeath to my loving son Phillip Brantly, two Negroes, named Pat & Sam, to him & his heirs forever. And I do hereby appoint my two sons, Joseph & John, executors of this my last will & testament, disannulling all other form of wills before by me made, as witness my hand & seal this 12th day of August 1777.
