I RICHARD CATE SEN. Of the county of Chatham and state of North Carolina being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God; calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the following manner and form. First, I give and bequeath to MARY my beloved wife during her natural life after that to my son RICHARD that part of my plantation whereon I now live beginning at the new canoe landing on Haw river running thence to a walnut tree, thence as the fence runs at this time to a newberry tree, thence along the fence to the branch thence up said branch to the big road, then up said road as it now runs to Allen Justice’s line, then said Allen line to the river, thence down the river to the beginning likewise all the household and kitchen furniture all her entire disposal. I give and bequeath to my beloved son RICHARD CATE whosaid also and likewise constitute, make and ordain my executor of this my last will and testament, that part of my land and tenements by him freely to be possessed and enjoyed. Viz; beginning at Allen’s corner, thence on said line to Stephen Justice’s line thenc along said Stephens line to the mouth of the meadow branch, theen, up the brand to Thomas Workman’s line thence said lint to____, thence on said line to a rock by a sloop on the big branch, thence up said branch to a white oak, thence cross a hill to the river field fence to a cedar tree, thence a straight line to the old canoe landing on Haw River, thence up said river to Allen Justice’s line, then along the said line to the beginning. I give and bequeath to SARAH my beloved daughter, that part of my land and tenements viz; beginning at a rock on the Big Branch, thence down the said branch to the river, thence up the river to the old canoe landing. Thence a straight line to the cedar and all along my son Richards line before mentioned to the beginning. I give and bequeath to SALLY CATE my granddaughter that part of my lands and tenements beginning at the mouth of the meadow branch, bounding by the heirs of widow Glosson’s lands, thence bounded by the line of Norfits, thence bounded on Thomas Workerman’ line to the meadow branch, thence down the branch to the beginning, now if the said Sally my granddaughter should die without heir, I then give and bequeath the said land to my three daughters MARY, PATSEY and SARAH to be equally divided between them, I have given and do now give and bequeath to Thomas Workerman and wife one mare, one cow, and calf, one bed and furniture, one sow and pigs, one ewe and lamb. I have given and do now give and bequeath to George Patterson and Patsy his wife one sow, one ewe and lamb. I do hereby leave and ordain that all my stock of every kind and farming utensils of every description to be sold to pay all my just debts. George Patterson or his wife Patsey sure to make her share equal to Thomas Workerman and Mary his wife have had. I declare and announce and confirm this is my last will and testament, In witness whereof I have herunto set my hand and seal, this the first day of October in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fourteen.
