December 11, 1830 North Carolina State Archives, Chatham County Wills, Call No. CR 022.801.12 In the name of God amen, I Joseph Hackney of the county of Chatham and state of North Carolina being weak of body but of sound mind and memory and to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament and revoking all former wills by me made. First of all I give and recommend my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian burial and tuching (could be taking) my worldy goods which it hath pleased god to bless me with, I give and despose of in the following manner: my will is first of all my just debts be paid, then I lend to my beloved wife Nancy Hackney the plantation whereon I now am living during her lifetime and also I lend unto my wife all my Negroes named Alfred, Edmont, Moris, Quncy, Calvin, Sam, Allen, Harlen, and Spenser and all my household and kitchen furniture and stock of all kinds and corn fodder wheat, bacon, and crops of all kinds to her her lifetime. Then I give unto my beloved daughter Salley Edwards one dollar and the interest of the money that my Negro boy Alfred will be sold for at my and wifes death. To her as long as she lives and then the money the said boy Alfred is sold for to be equally divided between her lining children to them there here and after for ever. Then I give unto my beloved daughter Elizabeth Edwards one dollar and the interest of the money that my Negro boy Edmont will be sold for at my and wifes death to her as long as she lives and this money to be equally divided between her childrens. Then I give unto my beloved son-in-law Lord Sellers one dollar. Then I give unto my daughter Anney Sellers's (deseased) children at my and wifes death the money that my Negro boy Moris shall be sold for to be equally divided between them there thers for ever. Then I give unto my beloved son John Hackney one dollar also give one third part of my stock of all kinds house hold and kitchen furniture and other articles I have at my and wifes death to him his hers and forever. Then I give unto my beloved son Charles Hackney one dollar. I also lend unto him his lifetime after by deth and wifes tow Negroes named Quncy and Spenser and at his deth to be equally divided between his children. Then I give unto my beloved son Tapley Hackney one dollar and at my deth and wifes one third part of my stock of all kinds house hold and kitchen furniture and all other articles to him, his his for ever. Then I give unto my beloved son Anderson Hackney one dollar also one third part of my stock of all kinds house hold and kitchen furniture and all other articles at my death and wifes to him his his forever. Then I give unto my beloved daughter Candace Williams one dollar to her hers forever. Then its my request that my deth and wifes for my Negro boy Harlin be sold and the money be equally divided between my sons Tapley Hackney and Anderson Hackney. It is my desire if any of my children should die without a lawful heir that the property should be sold and divided between the rest of the living children.
