CHATHAM COUNTY, NC - WILLS - John Moon, 25 Feb 1813 ----¤¤¤¤---- Transcribed by Branson Kimball directly from the original in the NC State Archives, December 2000 "The Last Will and Testament of John Moon, died 1813 Be it remembered that I John Moon of Chatham County, State of North Carolina, being sick in mind and weak in body, but perfect in mind and memory, calling to mind the mortality of my body, & knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the following manner & form- first I order that all my just debts be paid together with my funeral charge- and the remaining part of my estate, I give bequeath and dispose of it in manner following I give to my wife Rachel Moon full priviledge of the house that I now live in and all of the land that I profits during her natural life or widowhood, that is so long as she remains my widow, She shall have full priviledge to cultivate or rent out the land and enjoy the profits arising therefrom during the above said term of life or widowhood- and at her decease or marriage, I give the land to my five sons, William, Simon, George, Jonathan & John, to each of them an equal part, and I order that my son Simon pay to his four brothers above named, to each of them three dollars & a quarter, amounting to thirteen dollars in the whole- hoping that my sons will be favorable with their brother Simon in exacting the payment; the land to be divided among my five sons above named (at my wife's decease or marriage) by my executor hereafter named- I allow my wife to sell so much of my personal property as will pay my debts and funeral charge, and all other charges arising from the execution of this will, and the remaining part of my personal estate I bequeath in the following manner, I give my wife the use of it all during the aforesaid term of life or widowhood, and at her decease or marriage I give to my son John my black walnut chest and one cow or heifer; & my log irons, and log chain, fire tongs and my young bay horse and one (?) that is now called his, and one feather bed and the bedding belonging to it, and one ax & one mattack & one weeding hoe, and one plaugh- and at my wife’s decease of marriage I give to my son Jonathan the following articles, my big pot and hooks and my black walnut box and the lock & key belonging to it- at my wife’s decease or marriage I give to my daughter Margaret my Dutch oven and bale and to my daughter Rachel one pot Rack and my Loom & (?), and to my two daughters Ann and Sarah I give to each of them a Quarter Dollar- I give to my wife the part that I hold in the company Schoolhouse and lot, to be at her entire disposal, I also leave to my wife’s disposal one feather bed & bedding her choice of the two, and one plaugh & guns her choice and after my wife's decease or marriage, the remaining part of my estate that is not left to her disposal nor bequeathed to other legalities in this will I order that the same by divided among all of my children male and female to each of them an equal part- to be divided to them by my executor, whom I allow to make sale of the same, I divide the money among the legalities aforementioned- And lastly I nominate, constitute & appoint my trusty friends Hugh Woody and Jesse Dixon executors to this my last will and testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 25 day of the 2nd month 1813.
