Recorded in Book 6, page 190. Be it remembered that I, Thomas Pugh, of North Carolina, Chatham County, knowing the uncertainty of my earthly existence, and that it is appointed unto all men once to die, I do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following (viz.). Item 1st. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Woody, the sum of five hundred dollars. Item 2nd. I give and bequeath unto the children of my deceased daughter, Esther Lamb, collectively, the sum of five hundred dollars. Item 3rd. I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Lydia Mendenhall, the sum of five hundred dollars. Item 4th. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Rachel Pugh, to her and her heirs and assigns forever, the north half of my lands to be divided equally by an east and west line. Item 5th. I give and bequeath to my grandson, Abner Lamb, the south half of my lands, including the houses where I now live, to him, his heirs, and assigns forever. Item 6th. It is my will that all of my property of whatsoever kind or nature, and not otherwise disposed of, be sold by my executor here after named, and the proceeds thereof, together with my notes, bonds, cash, and accounts, be equally divided amongst all my children namely, Mary Woody, Esther Lamb's children collectively, Rachel Pugh, Eli Pugh, and Lydia Mendenhall. And if there shall not be enough to fill up the three first mentioned bequests, then and in that case it is my will that they be reduced in proportion to the sum bequeathed. Item 7th. I do hereby nominate, constitute, and appoint Isom Cox and James Woody sole executors of this my last will and testament. In witness of the said Thomas Pugh have hereunto set my hand and seal, this second day of the first month in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty-four.
