Chowan County, NC - John Pipkin, Indenture of Adam Knight, 1711 ¤¤¤¤¤¤ Colonial Record of NC Vol V, 1709-1723, CCR 104 (408) Att a generall holden att the house of Capt Jno Heclesfield in Little River the last tuesday in Oct 1711, the Honorable Nathall Chevin and Francis Del La Mare Justices being present they adjourned the court till thirsday the first day of November next... Thirsday the first of November 1711 the Court sits, Present the Honorable Nath Chevin, Franc Delamare, Joathan Jacochs,Esqrs, Justices... Whereas at the last General Court Adam Knight an orphan by his humble petition, sued the court that he had served his full time for which he was bound unto Mr Nick Crisp and prayed that he might (be) discharged from his master where upon the said Court ordered at the next court in course and John Pipkin appearing before this court and by his petition shewing that he the said Adam Knight was by indenture to serve till he was thirty years of age which is not yet expired and the said indenture he the said Pipkin as being assignee of Nich Crisp produces in court whereupon it is Ordered that the said Pipkin have the liberty to aprehend and take up the said Adam Knight in what so ever part of this Government he shall be found and having so taken to carry him before the Governor or anyone of the Councill before whom the whole matter on both sides shall be heard and determined... It puts on a whole new perspective on our John Pipkin. John had only 100 acres of land in 1704 and then in 1711 he had accumulated enough wealth to have purchased the indenture of an able bodied man.
