Chowan County, NC - Fire at Goal, 1789 Edenton, NC - Feb. 28 On Saturday night last about 12 o'clock the felons confined in the goal of this town, in expectation of obtaining their liberty, set that building on fire; it happened very fortunately however that a negro man passing by discovered the flame as it first appeared on the outer side, who immediately gave the alarm, and timely assistance being given, it was extinguished without much damage. When the people first entered the goal, the prisoners, though almost suffocated with the smoke, pretended to be in a sound sleep, and quite ignorant of the matter.
